Jack, I have no idea of the history of gazing balls, but I just may go learn. The reason she has blue is because that's what I bought her. She has a red one, but my son and his buds were playing baseball and destroyed it.
The distortion comes from the surface of the ball. A blue filter on a silver ball would have given a similar effect.

This image has a really great cool under-watery vibe to it. Glad to see you having fun with that 100mm. Someday I'll have one too ... :)
Love the coloration...great capture (among so many on your blog)...
Dear Wayne:
What is the thought and history behind the glazing balls in Victorian gardens? Whay made you wife go with blue?
Would a blue filter hve given you the color, if not the distortion?
Questions, questions tonight.
